2009 Metisse La Mekerra Awarded 93

The 2009 Metisse Knights Valley is a silkier, racier and more polished wine than the 2008 I tasted alongside it. Dark red berries, flowers, licorice, menthol and mocha are layered into a rich, textured finish. This is flat-out delicious. Here too, the style is opulent and full-bodied. All of the elements are beautifully in place. The 2009 is 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot aged in French oak barrels, 33% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

I was very impressed with these wines from Philippe and Cherie Melka. The Melkas source fruit from a variety of vineyards in Napa Valley and Knights Valley. The flagship Metisse series represents a blend of French and American cultures.

"In 2007, Napa's Philippe Melka harvested his first hillside grapes from La Mekerra Vineyard for his Métisse label (92, $125). Knights Bridge has incorporated the area name and makes Cabernet and Chardonnay."

The 2008 Métisse La Mekerra Vineyard which is 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, reveals similar notes of chocolate, espresso, plum, anise, black currant and kirsch.  Slightly denser and plumper than the 2007, this beautiful wine should drink nicely for 10-15 years.

The 2007 Metisse La Mekerra Vineyard which is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc, possesses a dense plum/purple color in addition to a big, sweet nose of chocolate intermixed with coffee beans, plums, black currants and sweet cherries.  It has a fleshy, medium to full-bodied, opulent personality as well as a heady, succulent finish.
