Melka Wines | Philippe | Cherie | Our Family
Who We Are
Philippe and Cherie Melka, co-proprietors of Melka Wines, together share a passion and love for fine wines and a dedication to a simple, singular goal; to produce a high quality, limited production of fine wines. Philippe, born and trained in Bordeaux, is winemaking consultant to several of Napa Valley's premium wineries. Cherie, a long-time Californian, has pursued her career in the wine industry since 1988 as a trained enologist at some of California's greatest wineries.
What We Do
The Melkas commitment to the highest quality, has brought them to a change in how their own two labels are produced. The initial offerings, starting in 1996, were a blending of small portions of the annual production of Philippe's select winery clients. Commencing with the 2003 vintage for both Métisse and CJ, the wines will be crafted from superlative single vineyards. The Melkas found that to ensure the stability and consistency of the wines, it was imperative that a change be made to sourcing quality fruit. After seven vintages, the timing was perfect to take Melka Wines to the next level. Their approach to winemaking, as it is to life in general, is balance and not excess.

Vineyards
The Métisse Proprietary Red Wine is made from a four acre vineyard located in St. Helena, California, next to Spottswoode winery, that was planted by David Abreu in 1999 to Bordeaux varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The soil profile, reminscent of Chateau Haut Brion, is very rich in gravels. The gravelly loamy texture allows the roots to penetrate deeply into the ground increasing the character and depth of the grapes.
The CJ Cabernet Sauvignon comes from two different vineyards located throughout the Napa Valley. These two vineyards demonstrate elegance and power which symbolizes our philosophy.
Winemaking Philosophy
Cherie and Philippe share the belief that the "wine must tell the story of the native soil". Through Melka Wines, Cherie and Philippe enjoy a freedom to nurture and blend each varietal and vineyard lot. The Melka's pursuit of excellence and balance in their wines is equaled only by their dedication to exceptional quality.
